AAA is out with its list of the best cars for commuters, and it is perhaps no surprise that alternative fuel vehicles top the list.

When you consider high gas prices, terrible traffic congestion, and that roughly 70 percent of the region's commuters drive to work, it might make sense that AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesman John Townsend says the Chevy Volt and Toyota Prius are the best compact cars for commuters.

"That's where the heart of the motorist is now. People are looking for fuel efficiency in cars," Townsend says. "They are looking for ways of going green and this does it. And it speaks right to the heart of Washingtonians, because we have one of the highest hybrid ownership rates in the whole country."

Many car commuters would also like alternatives. Not necessarily alternative fuels, but alternatives to the automobile.

A recent study on congestion pricing by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments found commuters are seeking transportation options like transit, walking or bicycling.
