When Superstorm Sandy hit in November, there was a strong sense of support amongst coastal residents and compassion for others just a few hours north in New York and New Jersey who saw their beach towns decimated.
But as the summer approaches, the harsh reality that no one really wants to talk about on the record is that the Jersey Shore's unfortunate loss, could be Coastal Delaware and Ocean City Maryland's gain.
"There are several challenges they are facing ," says Andy Malis, the president of Ocean City's advertising company MGH. "First, the amenities, many of the restaurants, the amusements, the bars, are not fully restored, and many of them may not be for years to come if ever."
So potential tourists who usually holiday in New Jersey may suddenly find themselves in search of a new destination.
Malis says Ocean City could be their first choice, because of an aggressive marketing strategy in those markets over the past four years featuring Rodney the Lifeguard. And while Rodney rescues tourists on TV screens all over New York and New Jersey, local businesses in Ocean City are quietly hoping the big crowds will come, and that summer arrives soon.
