The University of the District of Columbia has named a new administrator to serve as interim president after its last president was fired, reports the Associated President.

The Board of Trustees announced Thursday that James Earl Lyons Sr. will take over UDC on March 20, according to AP. Board chairwoman Elaine Crider says Lyons has an impressive academic history after serving as president of three universities over the past three decades.

Lyons is a past president of Bowie State University in Maryland, Jackson State University in Mississippi and California State-Dominguez Hills. He was secretary of the Maryland Higher Education Commission from 2007 to 2010.

Former UDC President Allen Sessoms was fired without cause in December.

The university is under pressure to cut costs. In January, UDC announced it would cut nearly 100 faculty and staff positions.
