The Maryland Senate is expected to vote on the death penalty and gun reform in the next couple of weeks.

Maryland Senate President Mike Miller (D) expects a repeal of the death penalty and an expansive gun control bill to both pass his chamber in the coming week.

Miller is against both measures, but he says votes approving both could come as early as Tuesday. While the death penalty repeal will likely see few changes on the Senate floor before a vote, the gun control legislation is expected to see additional changes. Miller says senators are still grasping with access to guns for those who have been committed over mental illnesses.

"It's sort of a divide between the far right and the far left," he says. "The far right wants tougher dealings with persons who demonstrated mental illness. And the far left is concerned with individual rights."

Both measures are top priorities of Gov. Martin O'Malley.
