D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray announced he will ask for an increase in city funding for public education for the next fiscal year.

Gray wants to increase the amount the city spends on each child's education by 2 percent. The increase means a bump up from approximately $9,100 to $9,300 for each student.

Both traditional and charter schools receive a base amount of money for each student they educate. In addition to this amount, some students receive additional funds, such as in cases where they're in special education or don't speak English as a first language.

This increase builds on a 2 percentage increase schools received this year. Gray says this funding will help "undergird" the city's efforts to improve public schools and prepare students to enter the workforce.

It will only be clear later this year how much this will cost the city. D.C.'s per pupil funding is among the highest in the country.
