Parts of Washington, D.C. received a facelift this weekend as the Presidential Inaugural Committee kicked off inaugural festivities with the National Day of Service.

Chelsea Clinton, Eva Longoria, and the Vice President's son, Beau Biden addressed the crowds on Saturday at the National Mall, reiterating Obama's call to set aside time from celebrating to serve those in need in their community.

The President and First Lady helped spruce up Burrville Elementary School in Northeast, while many cabinet secretaries fanned out across the city, some volunteering in food banks and others beautifying the Mall.

"There are many things going on here in D.C. and then we have thousands of events in the states across the country," says Marlon Marshall, a senior advisor for the Presidential Inaugural Committee, who helped orchestrate the effort.

Marshall and others also helped sign up volunteers so that this year's day of service will last longer than 24 hours.

"We're going to connect local volunteers with organizations across this country, build relationships and have folks pledge to do service throughout the year that will continue to make our communities even greater in this country.

A massive tent was set up on the Mall that featured nearly 100 organizations with service opportunities in seven areas: community resilience, economic development, education, environment, faith, health and veterans and military families.

The Obama administration began the National Day of Service four years ago and hopes to make it an inaugural tradition.
