O'Malley And Bloomberg Address Gun Violence At Baltimore Forum

At a gathering of experts on curbing gun violence, Maryland governor Martin O'Malley gave an overview of the legislation he will propose to state lawmakers later this week.

O'Malley explained how his plan will target semi-automatic rifles and other gun related concerns.

"It will ban military assault weapons that have no place on the streets of Baltimore," O'Malley says. "It will secondly have a common sense licensing requirement."

The Governor says his plan also addresses mental health issues that could lead to gun violence.

"Investments in better treatment and the creation of a Center for Excellence on early intervention of serious mental illness," O'Malley says.

The final part of the plan looks at school safety, with the hope that tragedies of the sort that happened in Newtown, Conn., can be prevented.

University President Ronald Daniels alluded to the summit's location, saying, "Sadly this is a place where gun violence is not a surprising event.but in far too many quarters of our city, a tragic and all too commonplace part of life."

New York City Mayor and co-chair of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, Michael Bloomberg introduced Gov. O'Malley.

The summit is scheduled for two days. Experts will adopt specific recommendations, which will be announced at a post-summit news conference.
