Hurricane Sandy left massive storm damage in the Eastern Shore town of Crisfield, Md.

The Eastern Shore town of Crisfield is continuing to recover from the effects of Hurricane Sandy.

Many residents had to spend the holidays somewhere other than their damaged homes, but they did receive an early gift from the federal government in the form of individual assistance funding.

"I think there's been 850 registrations to date that have been processed and about $1.5 million paid out for both rental assistance and home repair, as well as personal property," says Craig Crosby with Federal Emergency Management Agency.

People are slowly getting back in their homes, and a few businesses have even reopened, but FEMA is scheduled to leave town in mid February, so Somerset County has formed a long-term recovery committee to help streamline the rebuilding process, which will likely take more than a year.

Town officials say residents have been extremely patient, even though many homes endured more damage than their estimated worth.

And for a town that has water on three sides of it, some worry that the long road to recovery will lead right into another hurricane season in a few short months.
