Montgomery County Holds Public Forum On Budget

Play associated audio

Thursday at 7 p.m., the first forum will be held at the Mid-County Community Recreation Center in Silver Spring.

Four other forums will be held in the weeks ahead, two of those will be in Silver Spring, while there will also be events in Germantown and Bethesda.

County Executive Isiah Leggett is scheduled to attend, and residents will be able to speak at each of the events.

In recent years, budget battles in Montgomery County have been combative, but this year might be different because the economic outlook in the county has improved. But cuts will still need to be made to county government, which leaders are blaming on a revised state law regarding education funding.

The "maintenance of effort" law requires counties spend more each successive year on their public school systems, and county council members have already said that requirement will force them to trim county government and parks, though in smaller amounts than recent years.

Montgomery County Budget Forum Schedule:

  • January 10, Mid-County Community Recreation Center
    2004 Queensguard Rd., Silver Spring
  • January 24, BlackRock Center for the Arts
    12901 Town Commons Dr., Germantown
  • January 28, Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Service Center
    4805 Edgemoor La., Bethesda
  • January 29, Silver Spring Civic Building
    One Veterans Plaza, Silver Spring
