D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson made some changes to committee assignments on Thursday.

As the D.C. Council kicks off a new two-year legislative session, chairman Phil Mendelson is restructuring the council's committee assignments.

The biggest change may be the return of a stand-alone committee for education — that responsibility will go to at-large council member David Catania.

Mendelson also shuffled the deck, so to speak. Muriel Bowser will take over the important "economic development" committee, which means the Ward 4 council member and potential mayoral candidate in 2014 will have a lot of influence over the city's major projects and developments.

Tommy Wells, another potential candidate for mayor, has been moved to the judiciary committee, where he will have oversight over the police department and other local authorities.

And Chairman Mendelson has also made Ward 8 council Marion Barry chair of a committee that deals with workforce and community affairs.
