University of Virginia alumni and trustees are calling for an investigation into why the school was put on warning last year by an accreditation agency.
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges issued the warning on Dec. 11, 2012, following the university's failed attempt to fire President Teresa Sullivan last summer.
The American Council of Trustees and Alumni, a higher education nonprofit, says the association had no basis for issuing the warning and that it overstepped its role as an accrediting agency.
The organization is calling for an investigation by the U.S. Department of Education into the agency's decision. The accrediting commission did not immediately respond to WAMU 88.5's requests for comment.
