A snow dusting in Chantilly, Va., on Dec. 26, 2012.

The entire D.C. area is under a winter weather advisory Wednesday as wintry mix creates major havoc on local roads.

Snow and sleet are making roads in Maryland particularly messy. Several accidents have been reported along I-70 in western Maryland, where total snowfall will be higher because of the mountains.

Motorists traveling to points north and further west should expect higher amounts of snowfall and prepare accordingly.

The State Highway Administration reminds motorists to leave plenty of travel time, drive with a full tank of gas, slow down and use low beam headlights.
