Virginia Lawmakers Team Up To Volunteer For Holidays

Fiscal cliff aside, sometimes the holidays do make it possible for politicians to forget about their differences and roll up their sleeves to help benefit their most needy constituents.

In Virginia, a Republican governor, a Democratic congressman, and the GOP House Majority Leader recently teamed up help feed those who are most in need during the holiday season.

The FeedMore program has brought 900,000 meals to children alone across Virginia in the last year. But during the holidays, it's especially challenging to collect, organize, and maintain the food stockpiles to continue these services. So it doesn't hurt to have a few well-connected political figures lend a hand to the daunting task.

Gov. McDonnell, who worked alongside Reps. Bobby Scott and Eric Cantor at the Central Virginia Food Bank, says governmental oversight is often tossed around in Congress, but Cantor joked that it's not needed here.

"I think that any kind of governmental oversight needs to be out of here," he says. "You see how well they're working."

All three loaded carts, restocked shelves, and talked to volunteers, and Scott says he's amazed at how much gets accomplished.

"I just wonder whoever thought of this idea had the nerve to think that it could actually work, but the food banks around the country are able to absorb huge donations and through their network make sure all those donations are put to good use."

All are advocating more citizen support through corporate and organizational giving, fundraisers, food drives, and individual donations.
