A neighborhood in northeast D.C. has won a $25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
The five-year grant is part a of the national Promise Neighborhoods initiative that targets high-poverty communities. It will go to schools and families in the Kenilworth Parkside neighborhood.
It's a program that's modeled on the Harlem Children's Zone, which holds that in order to be successful, you can't just support the student; you have to support the entire neighborhood.
The grant will provide support with prenatal care, after-school tutoring and crime prevention, as well as also help improve child care to make sure children are ready for kindergarten. It will build on mentoring, tutoring, after-school programs, and college and career counseling, and work with dozens of community partners on health and other issues.
