More than 40 percent of people in the D.C. region plan to travel 50 miles or more over the holidays.
Those numbers come from the annual survey from AAA Mid-Atlantic, which reports the average trip length will be more than 700 miles, and more than 90 percent of holiday travelers plan on driving.
If the projections hold true, it will be the highest travel volume this decade, with 2.3 million people leaving the region. Air travel is making a bit of a comeback, as AAA says almost 6 percent of people with travel plans intend to fly.
For the purposes of the survey, the holiday travel period is between Dec. 22 and Jan. 1.
