Dominion Working On Largest Fuel Cell Power Project

Fuel cells are a bit like batteries that use hydrogen or natural gas and oxygen as fuel to generate electricity with very little pollution. Dominion Power just bought the largest one in North America. It could provide energy to 15,000 homes in Bridgeport, Conn.

Connecticut residents pay the second highest electricity rates in the country, which helped make the idea of fuel cells more attractive. There were also local tax incentives to attract the project to Bridgeport.

Jim Norville with Dominion says the utility is expanding its clean energy portfolio.

"We have wind farms in West Virginia and Indiana, we are developing solar plants in Virginia, we are looking to build offshore wind farms off the coast of Virginia," he says.

Dominion's offshore wind pilot project, partially funded by the federal government, is expected to get up and running by 2017.
