'Small Business Saturday' Aims To Drive Local Economy

Big retailers saw their lines surge Thanksgiving night and then into Black Friday. Now small businesses are hoping to get into the action. Today has been dubbed Small Business Saturday. It's a way to support local businesses, and it's also attractive to people who want to avoid packed malls and shopping centers.

The day has been observed since 2010. It was started by American Express to draw attention to small businesses that can get overlooked because of the national advertising blitz by big retailers this time of year.

About 100 million people participated last year.
