Virginia Restricts Out-Of-State Deer Kills, Citing Disease

Play associated audio

Virginia is putting limits on deer shot and killed in other states that hunters can bring home this year. The restriction applies to deer bagged in Pennsylvania, because several have shown signs of chronic wasting disease.

The disease affects the brains and nervous systems of deer, elk, and moose in North America. And although there's no evidence to suggest that it poses a risk to humans or domestic animals, the state is taking precautions.

Hunters will no longer be able to bring whole caracasses of deer killed in Pennsylvania over state borders and into Virginia. Only portions of the dressed animal will be allowed in the state, such as boned meat that is cut and wrapped, or antlers with no meat or tissue attached.

Chronic Wasting disease has been detected in 22 states, including Virginia.

Restrictions are also in effect in Maryland's Allegany County.
