What Time Does Giant, Safeway, Harris Teeter, Etc. Close On Thanksgiving?

Did you forget the cranberry sauce? Did the person you assigned to bring mashed potatoes put onions or something else "yucky" in them that your kids won't eat? Or maybe your dog chowed down on the corner of the pie that you thought you put out of reach. 

No matter what happens, many D.C. area residents may find themselves needing to run out for a last minute item at the grocery store on Thanksgiving. But will it be open? WAMU 88.5 tracked down the holiday hours of the region's major grocery chains so you don't have to. See below: 

  • Safeway: All area stores open from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. 
  • Giant: All stores open 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving
  • Harris Teeter: All stores opening at normal weekday times, closing at 2 p.m.
  • Food Lion: All stores open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Wegmans: All stores open 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. 
  • Trader Joe's: CLOSED

As for Whole Foods, they had to make it complicated and allow each individual store to decide their hours on their on:

  • P Street: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Foggy Bottom: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Georgetown: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Tenleytown: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Friendship Heights: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Arlington: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Old Town: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Tysons: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Vienna: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Springfield: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Reston: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Fair Lakes: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Silver Spring: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Bethesda: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Rockville: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Kentlands/Gaithersburg: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
