Seawall Project Approved To Protect Tangier Island

A jetty and seawall will be built to protect Tangier Island's harbor, says Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, a project eagerly awaited by residents of the 3-mile island in the Chesapeake Bay.

The island has been threatened by erosion and storm surges for years, and that also threatens the livelihoods of many residents. Much of the island's economy is dependent on the harbor serving as a hub for commercial fishermen. The island has fewer than 500 residents and more than a quarter of them are licensed commercial watermen.

McDonnell says the project will cost about $4.2 million overall, with the federal government paying for about $3.2 million. The commonwealth will pay the rest.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2017.
