Balloon Sightings Likely As Alexandria Mulls Potomac Yard Metro

Play associated audio

The city of Alexandria, Va., is studying the potential visual impact of building a new Metrorail station in the Potomac Yard area. Motorists along the George Washington Memorial Parkway may notice balloons used for testing in the area.

Alexandria will conduct balloon testing at three possible sites for a Potomac Yard Metro station.  One option is at the Potomac Greens development, one is behind the Target on Jefferson Davis Highway, and a third would be an elevated station in between the other two locations.

The balloons will be used to take photographs and video images from each site.  The goal is to better understand the visual impacts of stations at the three possible locations.

City officials warn the balloons may be visible above the GW Parkway for more than an hour at a time when tests are conducted. They say motorists are not allowed to stop along the parkway to watch.

The tests are expected to run through December 7.
