The Ocean City pier was one of the most prominent infrastructure casualties from Hurricane Sandy, but its expected to be back in shape by next summer.

Ocean City's iconic pier is getting a facelift, after it was damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

Strong winds and surf ripped away a large section of the historic pier, hurling it into the ocean. All that was left standing after Sandy's fury were a few pilings, which have since been removed.

Now rebuilding is set to begin by the pier's franchise holder — Charles R. "Buddy" Jenkins — who took over its maintenance in 1975.

Although the pier doesn't belong to the town, Ocean City has offered a franchise agreement for pier control, for decades.

Jenkins has reportedly committed to rebuilding the pier in time for the 2013 summer season.
