Some students from Washington Mill Elementary in Alexandria, Va. are honoring the service members in their lives today in a Veterans Breakfast — a tradition at the school going back 12 years.

Principal Tish Howard says her mother, a staff sergeant in the Army, always credited her years of service as one of the things that gave her the strength to raise children by herself in the '40s and '50s. That spirit is part of what informed this Veterans Day tradition.

"We have a lot of parents who are part of the military or retired grandparents who are retired military, and it was just a way of taking the day and saying thank you to all the people who keep our children safe," says Howard.

Lolita Robinson, a U.S. Army Veteran of eight years, has been attending the breakfast for three years. She has a niece who's in second grade, and a nephew who's in the first grade at the school.

"It gives me a sense of pride, and I'm very happy to be here," says Robinson. "It's great appreciation from the community and the school."

For Principal Howard, it was an especially emotional day, because she has announced her retirement.

"It's with a little bit of sadness, but some excitement too, that I am looking forward to the future," says Howard. "But this will be the last official Veterans Day Breakfast that I get to host, so it's a special day for me too."
