Damascus Residents Approve Beer And Wine Sales

Residents in Damascus, Md. approved a measure to allow the sale of beer and wine in local restaurants.

Damascus residents in the town of just over 15,000 voted last Tuesday to allow alcohol sales in restaurants.

Damascus had been one of the few dry towns left in Maryland. In fact, no liquor has been sold in Damascus since the end of prohibition in 1933. The last time it was put to a vote and defeated was 1996. This year, the referendum question on alcohol was put on the ballot by the state's General Assembly.

The passage allows restaurants to apply for a license to serve wine and beer, but only to customers who are seated. The measure still bans the opening of bars and the sale of hard liquor.
