Republicans and even some Democrats have voiced their discontent earlier this year with the way Maryland's 6th Congressional District was redrawn, saying that the lines were gerrymandered for a democratic win.

This past Tuesday, Democratic John Delaney defeated 10-term Republican Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, and despite the controversial redistricting, he's confident he represents the entire region.

Delaney says the key to his election was communication with voters, and points to what he called his "strong win" across the whole district.

"We won in Montgomery County, but we also won in the western part of the district which was the old congressional district, so I think there's an opportunity now that redistricting is behind us, to really unify the district around the message," he says.

Delaney says his priorities include representing his constituents, working on jobs for Marylanders and to efforts to help move Congress forward on the deficit.

"My sense is the American people will put pressure on us to get things done."

Delaney says he'll be working to help Maryland deal with federal spending cuts that have many of his constituents concerned.
