Montgomery County Residents Petition For Later High School Hours

Play associated audio

Thousands of people in Montgomery County have signed a petition demanding later start times for county high schools.

Most schools in the county begin class before 7:30 a.m. Supporters say research shows a lack of sleep is linked to poor academic performance, absenteeism and car crashes during low light hours.

Earlier this week, a student was struck and killed shortly after 7 a.m. while on her way to Seneca Valley High School in Germantown.

The petition, signed by more than 7,000 people since it was launched Oct. 15, will be presented to the school board later this month.
