A police officer in the District is in the hospital and a suspect was shot and killed in a fatal altercation Friday morning near the 3500 block of 17th Street NE in the District's Brookland neighborhood.
The incident happened shortly after 7 a.m. Friday. Police were responding to a domestic dispute involving a grandson assaulting his grandfather at the home when the suspect was attacked, says Police Chief Cathy Lanier.
"When the officers approached the house, the suspect came up from behind and attacked the officers with a knife," says Lanier. "One of the officers received multiple lacerations from the suspect, then turned and discharged his weapon."
The suspect succumbed to his wounds. Both the officer and the original victim were transported to the hospital.
Police say the officer's injuries are not life-threatening.
"The last thing any police officer wants to do is use deadly force," says Lanier. "It's very upsetting for every officer because it's something that we don't want to do, and everybody understands just how traumatic it is for the officer."
