Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell was at the Career Pathways Network Conference, when he was asked why this forum was different from the several other conferences that recently took place.

"It's the largest group that brings educators and workforce development specialists, and employers together in one room to talk about this vitally important topic of how do we make sure people are actually prepared for the great jobs of the future," says McDonnell.

One of the conference's workshops, titled College and Career Readiness, is a one McDonnell says is imperative because it helps prepare students for a competitive workforce.

"We're looking this year at more ways to increase the accountability so that a high school degree really means that you're ready for college, or ready for a job," he says.

The National Career Pathways Network will assess the effectiveness of state, local, and federal programs, then issue report cards. McDonnell says then the state can decide what needs tweaking or where to invest funds to improve them.
