Maryland Hospital Worker Sentenced For Stealing Patient Info

A Maryland hospital worker has been sentenced to time served plus six months house arrest for his involvement in identity theft of confidential patient information.

Kenneth Elliott McDowell was convicted of taking patient records home from work at the University of Maryland Medical Center and Bon Secours Hospital, then allowing two other people to copy confidential personal identifiers and payment information, including credit and debit cards and checking account numbers.

The information was used to open credit accounts and steal identities of the hospital patients.

Prosecutors say McDowell was also submitting false reports, trying to hide the fact that he wasn't doing his job.

In addition to home detention, McDowell, 47, will also be ordered to pay more than $22,000 in restitution to the identity theft victims.
