Last Minute Write-In Campaign Fails To Unseat Berlin Mayor

Play associated audio

Strolling the streets of Berlin, Md. is kind of like walking into a Norman Rockwell painting — a horse drawn carriage trots past antique shops and century old buildings, as townsfolk go back and forth to the local farmers markets.

But even this quiet town is not immune to political controversy.

Mayor Gee Williams won re-election earlier this week, but not without a fight.

Last minute write in candidate Ellen Lang allegedly ran at the urging of the town's fire department, which is livid with Williams for pulling $650,000 from its budget.

Williams says the town had no other choice but to cut funding after the fire department refused to address numerous claims of sexual harassment and racial abuse.

The fire department, vehemently denies it had anything to do with the last minute write in campaign, calling the mayor's claims completely false.
