Two white-tail deer cross the road.

Rock Creek Parkway is one of the most scenic drives in the urbanized Washington, D.C. region, but this time of year, it could be dangerous for motorists, especially motorcycle riders, due to deer mating season.

The white-tail deer are very active right now, especially at dawn and at dusk. AAA Mid-Atlantic says out of eight fatal crashes in Virginia and Maryland involving deer since 2010, seven have been motorcyclists.

Following are some tips for drivers and motorcyclists to avoid deer accidents:

  • Avoid roads with a large deer population, especially at dusk and at dawn.
  • At night, use high beams when it's safe to do so.
  • Remember that deer travel in herds, so when there's one, there will be likely be more.
  • Blasting a car or motorcycle horn continuously could help scare deer away.
  • When encountering a deer on the road, break firmly, but don't swerve.
