Maryland Municipal League Members Eyeing State Money

Play associated audio

Maryland's General Assembly, like a lot of states, has been tightening its belt in recent years, diverting money from gas taxes and other highway user fees, to balance the state's budge, instead of sharing the wealth with municipalities.

But the state's Municipal League members say that's got to change. During the group's fall meeting, they members said their top priority is getting those shared state dollars back, to help pay for local roadwork and law enforcement.

Without the money, municipal governments have to rely more on property taxes to pay for local services.

The local governments are also considering lowering their costs by posting legal notices online, and cutting newspaper advertising costs.
