Maryland Parents Educate Teens On Drunk Driving

It's nearing homecoming season at high schools across Montgomery County. In anticipation of the upcoming festivities, Maryland officials are working with parents and students to prevent alcohol-related crashes.

Elaine Arndt, whose child attends Winston Churchill High School in Potomac, participates in Every 15 Minutes, a program at the school that teaches teenagers the dangers of mixing alcohol with driving.

As part of the program, students, teachers and parents collaborated to create a video that highlights the dangers of drunk driving, particularly during homecoming.

The video begins with girls drinking alcohol and then piling into a car and driving away, before a simulated crash occurs in front of most of the Churchill High School student body. A real ambulance then takes away one of the make-believe victims.

"It was pretty emotional," says Zach Rayzon, who plays the victim's brother. "Even though you know it's fake, you get some of the real feelings and it hits home a little bit."

Elaine Ardt, who plays the victim's mom, says it was a terrifyingly teachable moment for all parents. She also went to the hospital to observe the actions they would take on a child who would have been injured. "It was just so intense and emotional," she says. "It was a terrible thing to see."

Arndt advises parents to pay more attention to their kids, and avoid having alcohol easily accessible in the house.
