Mendelson Praises LivingSocial For Backstopping Nats' Metro Tab

If the Nationals sell out their expected NLDS series, Mendelson says he expects LivingSocial will recoup their deposit with Metro.

D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson says he's glad LivingSocial is stepping up to the plate and helping pay for late-night Metro service during the Nationals' postseason run.

At a press conference earlier today, Mendelson praised the daily deal company for agreeing to underwrite the deposit needed by Metro to keep the service going if any games run into extra-innings.

"If the playoff games sell out, my guess is they will sell out, then there will be enough ridership on Metro there will not be a cost," Mr. Mendelson said. "It's just a function of putting down a deposit. It shows some civil leadership on their part."

For weeks, the Nationals, Metro, and the District Government appeared deadlocked over who should pay for the subway service, potentially leaving fans stranded at the park next month.

While other sports teams and venues pay for the service, Mendelson says it appears that Major League Baseball may the one to blame for instructing the Nationals not to pay because the league didn't want to set a precedent for other cities to follow.

The Nationals need just one more win or a loss by the Atlanta Braves to clinch the National League East title.
