People watching is about to take on a new meaning on Ocean City's boardwalk, as town officials will use money budgeted in the Boardwalk Restoration Project to install an underground fiber optic network that will run the entire length of the wooden walkway.
The underground network will enable the town to install 10 new surveillance cameras to help police officials, and it will allow the town to streamline vital messages to the public, like storm warnings, or missing children alerts via digital message boards that are located intermittently along the boardwalk.
The final phase of the boardwalk's reconstruction will commence this fall, and town officials hope that the public will realize that the $76,000 worth of cameras in the sky is there to play a role in public safety, and not play big brother.
