Washington, D.C. is launching a campaign to combat discrimination against the city's transgender community. Advocates say it is the nation's first government sponsored campaign to focus exclusively on transgender and gender-non-conforming communities.
The goal is to spread awareness, understanding, and respect for the transgender community, as well as prevent violence and discrimination.
Over the past two years, there have been a series of attacks against transgender people, and as WAMU 88.5 first reported this summer, the founder of a new Latina transgender organization received a death threat in late July.
City leaders say the campaign is part of a larger effort to ensure members of the District's transgender community enjoy equal access to employment, housing and public accommodations.
