MCPS Considers Baseline Concussion Testing For Athletes

Play associated audio

Montgomery County Schools Superintendent Joshua Starr says the school system is considering a district-wide baseline testing program to identify student athletes who suffer concussions and determine when they can return to the field.

A growing body of evidence has shown that those who suffer from concussions demonstrate memory problems that linger long after their injuries.

The school system will request proposals from third-party providers to administer and run the testing program. A county task force will first examine the parameters for the testing program before a formal bid request is presented.

Among the issues to be considered: what sports will be tested, and where will the money for the testing come from?

Currently, nine MCPS schools offer baseline testing to some of their student athletes, but these schools have to raise the money themselves and use volunteer health professionals to help administer the program.
