At the Democratic National Convention this week, the Virginia delegation has had a strong focus on the presidential and U.S. Senate races in the Commonwealth this year. There had been speculation that a candidate for governor might emerge as well, but Democrats may have to wait a little longer for that.
Former Democratic National Committee chairman and former Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe has been watched closely in Charlotte this week. He's been considering another run for governor in Virginia next year. Speaking on WAMU's Kojo Nnamdi Show today, however, McAuliffe refused to make a commitment one way or another, and said he's focused now on supporting Democratic presidential and U.S. Senate candidates.
"As soon as that election's over, I'll make a decision within, very close, a week or two after that," said McAuliffe. "I've worked hard. I've prepared."
Republicans will select their nominee for governor at a convention next spring. Lt. Governor Bill Bolling and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli are vying for the nomination.
McAuliffe last ran for Governor in 2009. He lost in a three-way primary to State Senator Creigh Deeds, who later lost to Gov. Bob McDonnell.
