Heavy rains caused flooding in flood-prone areas of the city last night; one of them, Bloomingdale in Northwest Washington, flooded for the fourth time since July.

Rhode Island Avenue NW was shut down for a short time overnight until the water subsided; three Metro stations also flooded and Green line service was suspended near the Shaw-Howard University Metro station.

Between 3 and 5 inches of rain fell at the Children's National Medical Center in Northwest by 9 p.m., the Washington Post reports

Mount Pleasant and Adams Morgan residents and businesses also reported flooding. In Bloomingdale, one man had to be rescued from his car when it became stuck in rising water. One Bloomingdale resident told NBC Washington that it took about an hour for flood waters to recede down the storm drains.

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray vowed to address frequent flooding in Bloomingdale and surrounding neighborhoods earlier this month; he appointed a task force to examine the problem and recommend solutions.

The $2.6 billion Clean Rivers project is expected to address the problem in the long term, but it's not scheduled to be complete until 2025. The task force will look at short term solutions; their report is due by the end of the year.
