Sargent Shriver To Be Honored By Maryland Dems At DNC

Play associated audio

Maryland Democrats will honor the legacy of the late Sargent Shriver during the Democratic National Convention this week in Charlotte, the Washington Post reports.

Shriver, who died last year, was the Democratic nominee for vice president in 1972. He and George McGovern lost that election in a landslide to President Richard Nixon and vice president Spiro Agnew, who, like Shriver was also a Maryland native.

Shriver is best known for being the first director of the Peace Corps during the presidency of his brother-in-law, John F. Kennedy. After his political career ended in 1976, he served briefly as the president of the Special Olympics, which were founded by his wife Eunice Kennedy Shriver.  An elementary school in Silver Spring is named for him.
