The director of the D.C. Department of the Environment has been fired.
Christophe Tulou was hired by then-Mayor Adrian Fenty in May 2010. He came to the Department of the Environment with a decade of experience on Capitol Hill and had also worked as secretary of Delaware's environmental department.
Tulou's firing is effective immediately.
Tony Robinson, a spokesman for City Administrator Allen Lew, says Tulou was fired for "a very serious breach of protocol," but he would not elaborate. Administration sources tell WAMU on background that Tulou contradicted Mayor Gray in conversations with officials at the Environmental Protection Agency. Tulou could not immediately be reached for comment.
The agency will be led on an interim basis by Keith Anderson, who had been Tulou's chief of staff. Robinson says Tulou's job will be filled on a permanent basis as quickly as possible.
