Time is running out for state and local officials and nonprofit groups in Virginia to request federal disaster funds to help with recovery from this summer's severe storms.
Officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency say the deadline to submit the requests for public assistance is Monday for localities included in the original disaster declaration. Areas in the amended declaration have until Sept. 13; 51 counties and 18 cities are included in the declaration.
Thunderstorms and wind from the severe storms in late June killed more than a dozen people in the Commonwealth and left millions of utility customers without power.
Local governments can apply for funding to help pay for repairs to public infrastructure, emergency protective measures taken during the storms and debris removal from public roads.
