There will be lane closures on I-66 over the weekend, as crews work on lane expansions.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says drivers can expect heavy delays this weekend on westbound Interstate 66 approaching the Capital Beltway.

Starting at 9 p.m. Friday night, multiple lanes will be closed, weather permitting. It's part of the multi-billion dollar 495 Express Lanes project, which is expected to last through the end of the year. This weekend's work is scheduled to continue through 5 a.m. Monday morning.

Crews will be performing demolition, excavation, paving, and marking roadways. VDOT says travelers can expect delays of up to 30 minutes, and the department says it's best to avoid the area if possible and to use alternate routes instead.
