Some lawmakers are pushing for tap water to be served at the presidential inauguration.

The District's water and sewer authority is asking Congress to serve tap water instead of bottled water at the presidential inauguration.

The authority's general manager George Hawkins wrote to New York Sen. Charles Schumer in an effort to justify the request. Hawkins says District tap water is a penny a gallon while bottled water costs 100 times more and is environmentally harmful.

Earlier this month, Schumer announced that New York-based Saratoga Springs will supply water for the inauguration.

Bottled water opponents say in addition to disposable bottles, trucking bottled water also creates environmental waste.

Hawkins claims if bottled water is served, the authority is willing to provide reusable water bottles to members of Congress who want to show their support for public water systems and the environment.
