Democrats Enlist Universities For Voter Registration

Play associated audio

Democrats in the D.C. Metro region are asking colleges and universities to help students get registered, so they can vote ahead of this year's election.

There have been a lot of changes to voter registration laws nationwide this year, with some states shrinking the time window to register. Some analysts say the new rules are confusing many minority communities as well as first time voters, many of whom are college students.

Maryland Congressman Steny Hoyer, the number two Democrat in the House, is leading an effort of 180 lawmakers in asking college administrators to help students get the correct information on how to register to vote during orientation. It also asks them to consider turning their campus into a polling center.

In 2008, then-senator Obama was able to energize young voters, but with college students facing bleak job prospects, Republicans believe they have a good chance of siphoning off that support this year. No Republicans signed on to the letter.
