The Maryland state prosecutor says it's dropping a criminal investigation into Anne Arundel County Police Chief James Teare because he has decided to retire. State Prosecutor Emmet Davitt announced Teare's resignation effective Aug. 1.
Davitt says it's important to resolve the matter without any further disruption to the police department. He also says the state prosecutor's office believes this resolution is in the best interest of the county's residents.
Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold was indicted in March on charges of misusing his police protection squad, including making them wait while he had sex with a county employee in parking lots and using his officers to conceal it.
