A pair of forest fires burning on federal land in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley is slowly getting under control, thanks to fire crews.
The smell of smoke from the fires reached as far as the D.C. region, triggering a flurry of emergency calls from concerned citizens.
The U.S. Forest Service says the neighborhood mountain fire has burned more than 2,000 acres since it was sparked by lightning on June 26. The fire expected to be to be fully contained by July 15.
For now, several parts of the Appalachian Trial are closed because of the blaze.
Another fire sparked by lightning on June 25 in the George Washington National Forest is more than 80 percent contained.
