O'Malley: Wisc. Recall Defeat Doesn't Affect Presidential Election

Gov. Martin O'Malley (D-Md.) says he does not believe the results of this week's recall vote in Wisconsin will have an impact on November's presidential election.

In his role as the chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, O'Malley spent some time in Wisconsin campaigning for the Democratic candidate ahead of Tuesday's vote. Controversial Republican Gov. Scott Walker was narrowly able to keep his post.

O'Malley says the only effect that result might have in November is that it showed how successful outside groups can be in spending unlimited money on campaign advertising, something O'Malley feels helped Walker win.

"It's hard to imagine a worse job ranking than 50th of 50 states," says O'Malley. "But if you have enough money, you can put out an alternative message, an alternative set of numbers, an alternative story and an alternative reality."

O'Malley noted that voters in Ohio last year defeated anti-collective bargaining laws in a referendum, saying that is not necessarily a sign that Democrats will be successful this fall either.
