Job seekers turn up in numbers to a job fair in 2011.
D.C.'s campaign to help unemployed residents find work has hit a new milestone. Mayor Vincent Gray says the One City One Hire program has reached 3,000 hires, and 40 percent of the workers are from Wards 5, 7 and 8, where the District unemployment is at its highest levels.
Gray says the program has been a major success, and he has fielded calls from Baltimore about replicating the program there.
The One City One Hire program offers incentives such as tax breaks and wage reimbursements to companies that hire at least one unemployed District resident. The D.C. jobless rate was 9.8 percent in March, but was as high as 24 percent in Ward 8.
Gray says the goal is eventually reach 10,000 hires.
