Conspicuously absent from Dominion Virginia Power's 15-year plan is any mention of large wind or solar power projects.

Environmental groups are organizing a rally in Richmond to coincide with a meeting of a key regulatory body. Demonstrators are pushing the state's largest utility for more wind and solar projects.

The Sierra Club is working with customers of Dominion Virginia Power to hold what they are calling a Rally for Our Clean Energy Future in downtown Richmond on Tuesday. The move is part of an effort to influence the company's 15-year Integrated Resource Plan.

The Integrated Resource Plan os a document that the utility is required to submit every two years, outlining how it plans to meet the Commonwealth's energy needs. The environmental groups say they are disappointed with Dominion's plan to build three new gas plants and one new nuclear reactor. Instead, the groups are calling for Dominion to invest in wind and solar power.

Organizers are planning to hold the demonstration outside the offices of the State Corporation Commission (SCC), which is scheduled to hold a public hearing at 10 a.m. on Dominion's plan.

"Our concern is that by failing to include renewable energy in it, they are consigning us to a fossil fuel and nuclear future, when the rest of the world is moving to a clean energy future," says Glen Besa, Director of the Virginia Sierra Club.

The SCC recently approved energy-efficiency and demand-reduction programs introduced by Dominion.
